Creative Pumpkin Carving Patterns is All the Rage in Halloween Today

It’s that time of year again when kids and grown-ups alike start picking pumpkins to fashion into Jack-o’-lanterns. However, the modern practice of pumpkin carving is miles away from the age-old tradition it was derived from.

Modern Carving

Guardian Liberty Voice writer Bridgette Bryant says that pumpkin carving nowadays is an exercise in creativity, challenging people to create their very own masterpieces and come up with something more than the usual spectacle of spooky faces:

Some of the more contemporary ideas include hollowed out pumpkins with various colored lighting sources, minimalistic clean cuts, smile-only cutouts with fabric and bobble add-ons, and Picasso-like Art Deco designs.

One brand-new and increasingly favorable trend is the friendly pumpkin. Instead of creating a scary design, some carvers choose to provide their trick-or-treating patrons with a warmer, more family friendly welcome. This style works best with larger pumpkins that have a clean texture and they can be decorated with craft store embellishments such as flowers, pinecones, sticks, and rustic ribbons.

In some ways, friendly faces and depictions of famous characters and personalities are becoming the norm in recent Halloweens. Companies that provide unique pumpkin carving patterns, such as, proudly champion the idea of creating “un-Halloween” lanterns to give this annual event a whole new twist.

After all, part of the fun in pumpkin carving is getting kids (and kids-at-heart) to come up with their own designs; and what better way to stimulate their creative juices than to encourage them to carve popular figures in place of good ol’ Stingy Jack?

That said, the beauty of Halloween lanterns hinges to a large degree on the right pumpkin to start with. Much like turnips and watermelons, which are also used to create Jack-o’-lanterns in some countries, pumpkins come in various shapes and sizes. The size and shape of the lantern design, and the firmness of the pumpkin itself, are just some of the things that should be taken into account when picking the right pumpkin. Professional carvers know this, so they have special tools ready to get the job done right.

If pumpkins aren’t available for one reason or another, watermelons can suffice. They share roughly the same thickness and firmness as pumpkins, so intricate carving pumpkins patterns can also work well on them. The only difference is that watermelons are darker and juicier.

Changes in Halloween pumpkin carving designs show just how much Halloween has evolved over the years. From scary to creative, however, Halloween continues to be a fun and festive occasion for all.
