What does a professional pumpkin carver and pattern designer create for his own daughter’s wedding?

If you are thinking of something exotic and complex, well, you’d probably be right for most pumpkin carvers. In my case, it was actually quite simple. All she wanted was a butterfly.

In the end, I was grateful for the simple request. With all the other things going the day before (and day of) the wedding, carving a complex watermelon would only have been more stressful (though I would have happily obliged).

watermelon carving of butterfly

You can download this watermelon carving pattern here (you will have to scroll all the way down), under my special occasion patterns.

Pumpkin Carving Patterns of People, Creating Pumpkin Patterns

How I Create Pumpkin Carving Patterns of People

How to create pumpkin carving patterns of people using Photoshop or your favorite photo editing software. Pumpkin carving patterns of people can be the most challenging type of pumpkin pattern to create because of the difficulty in capturing the likeness of a person in simple shapes. In this video, pumpkin carver Jay Ball demonstrates how to create pumpkin carving patterns of people, in this demonstration the subject is Ron Paul, and shows every step in this complete unabridged full length video from start to finish.

Creative pumpkin carving has become an increasingly more popular activity during the Halloween season. More and more people have developed the skill of carving intricate pumpkins that are works of art. Relatively few, however, can create custom pumpkin patterns, particularly of people. Jay Ball shows how he does it in this video, but there are as many different ways to create pumpkin carving patterns of people as there are pumpkin pattern creators.

Even though you know it’s temporary, in this video I show tips on how preserve and make your watermelon carving last.

Watermelon Carving Preserving

On page 7 of my book, You Too Can Create STUNNING Watermelon Carvings, I talk about the nature of “Temporary Art”:

“My object in creating a beautifully carved watermelon is to create a special memorable moment. I like it when people not only enjoy my art, but remember it for a long time.

One great thing about ephemeral art (that means art that is shortlived or fleeting), is that it supports living in harmony with nature. Seasons change, leaves turn color, flowers bloom and wither. Life is always in a state of transition. Like Japanese sand and rock gardens, sand painting, ice sculpting, or sidewalk paintings, the art is on display only for a fleeting moment in time.

On a more practical note, watermelons are biodegradable. You don’t have to store them in your closet all year only to bring them out once for a short holiday season. It’s sort of like disposable dishes. When you’re done with them, you just throw them away.”

With all that in mind, you will still want to make your carved watermelon last as long as you can. Even though you know it’s temporary, in this video I show tips on how preserve and make your watermelon carving last.

Carve Watermelon

Watermelon carving in a 2D style is easier than the more advanced 3D Thai style carving. 2D method will require a pattern to carve watermelon. After choosing your melon and cleaning out the melon, you will want to transfer the pattern. In this video Jay Ball will demonstrate how to transfer the pattern using transfer paper.

Other methods of transferring watermelon patterns are shown in Jay’s book, You Too Can Create STUNNNG Watermelon Carvings.
